Eskasoni breaks ground on new long-term care facility

Construction has officially begun on a new long-term care home in Eskasoni, a home that will incorporate Mi’kmaq language and culture.

Kiknu, which translates to “our home” in English, had its official sod-turning ceremony yesterday.

Eskasoni chief Leroy Denny says many of the community’s elders are staying in care homes around Cape Breton, and Kiknu gives those elders a chance to come home.

The federal government committed $19.7 million, while the provincial government committed $6.5 million.

Denny says the home will create 70 new jobs in the community, helping them become even more self-sufficient.

Construction on the long-term care facility is scheduled to finish in August of 2022.
