Elective Surgeries Back On, Strang Recommends mRNA as Second Dose

Premier Iain Rankin says all elective surgeries are back on now that there’s less strain on the health system.

Rankin says, if everything goes well, the province should be able to move into the second phase of its reopening plan next week.

Meanwhile, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Strang is recommending people who got the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine as a first dose should get a Pfizer or Moderna shot as a second dose.

He’s says the recommendation is based on rare side effects from AstraZeneca and a recent study suggesting people are better protected if they get an mRNA vaccine as a second dose.

People will still be able to get an AstraZeneca shot as a second dose if they choose.

Those who got the vaccine as a first dose will soon be getting an email with more information on options for the other vaccines.
