Regional Council voted this morning to turn the operation and cost of its curbside blue bag program over to the producers of packaging materials.
Solid Waste Manager Francis Campbell told council provincial legislation will allow the change to happen over a two-year period starting next year.
The municipality has to notify the province by January 1st whether it wants to opt for the change or continue collecting and processing blue bag material itself.
Campbell says having producers being responsible for blue bag collection and processing will save the municipality about 2 million dollars a year.
He says the change won’t lead to any reduction in the solid waste workforce because blue bag collection is a small part of what the workers do.
