Council To Discuss New Expenses Policy

Regional Councillors will be asked to discuss a new expenses policy at this morning’s council meeting.

Newly elected councillor Steve Gillespe is proposing the current 140 dollar a week travel allowance for Mayor and Council be eliminated and replaced with a process of repayment for receipts.

He also says the expenses of the mayor, councillors and municipal staff should be posted online.

Meanwhile, veteran Councillor Ray Paruch has asked that a proposed Charter for the Regional Municipality be put on the agenda at today’s meeting.

The Charter will give the CBRM broader powers than provided under the municipal government act.

However, some councillors have expressed concerns about some of its provisions and say they’d like to see Council discuss the matter.

The council meeting is due to get underway at 9:30 this morning at the Civic Centre in Sydney.
