Council Declares Five Schools Surplus Property

Regional Councillors have voted to declare five soon-to-be closed schools as surplus property.

Bridgeport School in Glace Bay, Gowrie Memorial School in Port Morien, MacLennan Middle School in Westmount, Mira Road School and Frank Ongo School in New Waterford are all owned by the municipality.

However, Councillors Kevin Saccary and Ivan Doncaster expressed concern at yesterday’s Council meeting that they weren’t given much notice about the planning department’s recommendation.

But, Planning director Malcolm Gillis told council that a decision had to be made soon so the municipality can get rid of the buildings.

The schools are among 17 slated for closure by the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board.

One of the schools going up for sale remains a subject of controversy.

Parents with students at Bridgeport School showed up at last month’s school board meeting to speak out against its planned closure in June.
