Council Briefed on Storm Response

The CBRM’s Emergency Management Organization briefed regional council yesterday on some of the challenges that were faced during last week’s ice storm and blizzard.

Thousands of people were without power and other services for hours and, in some cases, days because of the storm.

Deputy Mayor Kevin Saccary says the challenges faced last week show that the EMO needs to be more flexible when it comes to deciding what constitutes an emergency.

He adds council has agreed to explore a number of different options to improve emergency preparedness.

Saccary says the EMO’s advisory committee needs to meet with regional council and staff to work out an improved approach to weather-related emergencies.
