Parks Canada is due to carry out controlled burns today at Paquette Lake in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
The federal agency says it’s carrying out the burns to gather information on the role and need for fire to maintain barren ecosystems.
It adds the results will also help fire experts better predict fire behaviour during wildfires.
The burns are due to start at 9:00 this morning and continue until late this afternoon.
Parks Canada says the Cabot Trail will remain open during that time but adds Paquette Lake road and the Mica Hill hiking trail will be closed.
It also says smoke and helicopters may be visible along the Cabot Trail between Neil’s Harbour and Cape North.
The operation is scheduled to take place over the next two or three days.
