2,000 tonnes of compost material at the former Phalen mine site will be removed over the next two weeks. CBRM Solid Waste Manager Francis Campbell made the commitment at a public meeting in Lingan last night to discuss concerns about the waste material. The left over material from the composting process had been transferred from the Cape Breton Regional Municipality to private company Bioengery. The company had hoped to make pellet fuel out of the bits of plastic and glass, but was unsuccessful. People in the area complained about the smell from the piles of material and worried about it attracting rodents as well as potentially harming well water. Meeting organizer Cam MacDougall says he’s glad to hear that the site is going to be cleaned up.
