One of two companies charged after the death of an international student in a Sydney apartment fire was fined $97,750 in Sydney provincial court this morning.
The Nova Scotia numbered company was charged with seven offences under the province’s Fire Safety Act.
The charges were brought after 34-year-old Rajesh Gollapudi from India died in a fire at a duplex on Park Street in December of 2022.
Ontario-based Hanover Storage was also charged with seven offences under the Fire Safety Act but the charges against the company were dropped today.
Deputy Fire Marshall Gary O’Brien says the fine against the numbered company is a stiff penalty for a such a small company.
The Crown also read the victim impact statement from Gollapudi’s father at this morning’s sentencing hearing.
The senior Gollapudi says he’s dealing with immense emotional and financial stress over the loss of his son.
