Committee Looks Into CB Child Poverty

Cape Breton’s child poverty rate was the subject of a meeting of the Legislature’s community services committee today.

Cape Breton Centre NDP MLA Kendra Coombes told the committee today the government isn’t doing enough to deal with child poverty on the Island.

Cape Breton Family Place Resource Centre executive director JoAnna LaTulippe-Rochon and United Way Cape Breton executive director Lynne McCarron were witnesses at today’s meeting.

Their testimony led Sydney River-Mira-Louisbourg PC MLA Brian Comer to put forward a motion to try to create an all-party committee of Cape Breton MLA’s to look into child poverty on the island.

The Liberal majority on the committee voted down the motion.
