Sydney’s Charlotte Street is getting upgraded next year.
Mayor Amanda McDougall says the municipality has been working hard for several years to come up with a plan to revitalize the downtown core.
Charlotte Street will be redesigned as a “complete street,” with plaza-width sidewalks, parking lanes on both sides of the street, a one-way lane for cars and trucks to pass, and enhanced landscaping and streetscaping.
New, high fiberglass power poles and buried communication lines are also in the plan for the downtown street.
Nova Scotia is contributing $3 million toward the project, while the Cape Breton Regional Municipality will contribute another $3 million.
Construction is set to begin next April.
