CBU Student Who Made Online Threat Gets Absolute Discharge

A Cape Breton University student who made an online threat that led to a lockdown at the campus have been given an absolute discharge and won’t have a criminal record.

Last October, 24 year-old Bertram William Bernard said he was coming to CBU with a gun on the social media site Yik Yak.

The threat led to a nearly four-hour lockdown of the campus while Regional Police carried out a search.

No sign of a threat was found.

In court yesterday, prosecutor Shane Russell said Bernard co-operated fully with police and adds the student also apologized and explained he had no intention of carrying out the threat.

Bernard has also been disciplined according to CBU’s code of conduct.

He’ll return for the fall semester to continue his studies in business administration.
