CBRP Officer Cleared After Man Injured During Arrest

The province’s police watchdog says it’s found no grounds to think a Cape Breton Regional Police officer committed a criminal offence when a man was injured during an arrest over the summer.

The Serious Incident Response Team says on July 22nd police were doing surveillance in the North Sydney area on a man who was reported to have a gun and was wanted for previous offences.

It says, when officers approached the vehicle the man was in, he didn’t comply with their commands and revved the engine.

The SIRT goes on to say officers saw objects in the vehicle that could be used as weapons, and an officer hit the man in the body and face multiple times in order to gain control.

The SIRT says a replica gun was found in the man’s waistband.

The police watchdog’s director, Erin Nauss, says she’s satisfied the officer’s actions were appropriate and reasonable in the situation.
