The CBRM is hoping to build a new central library on the ground floor of a proposed development on the Sydney waterfront.
At a special meeting this evening, council voted unanimously to support a series of recommendations to get the project going, including entering into negotiations with the developer, Doucet Developments.
The recommendation came from the municipality’s Chief Engineer Wayne MacDonald who told council the development would bring in enough residential and commercial tax money to offset the cost of a 20-year lease.
MacDonald also told council the municipality only has $2 million available to put toward the $9.5 million cost of furnishing and equipping the library.
He says more money will have to come from other levels of government and additional fundraising efforts.
