A new report form the Nova Scotia chapter of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives finds Cape Breton’s child poverty rate in 2022 was 32.4%.
That’s an increase of 17.4% from 2021.
A further breakdown finds the child poverty rate in the federal riding of Sydney-Victoria was 33.9% in 2022.
The child poverty rate in Cape Breton-Canso that also includes Guysborough County on the mainland was 25.9% in 2022.
The report’s authors are calling on government to significantly improve and prioritize income support to lift families with children out of poverty.
