The Island’s tourism industry group is crediting the so-called Trump Bump and its efforts to take advantage of the phenomenon for a spike in tourism numbers.
Destination Cape Breton says the number of visitors up to July of this year rose by 14 percent overall.
That’s compared with an overall increase of 3 percent, provincially.
It adds tourism numbers in Cape Breton were up 24% in May, 15% in June and 14% in July.
The Association also says its ‘Trump Bump’ campaign has been shortlisted for a Canadian Tourism Award for the Social Media/Digital Marketing Initiative of the Year.
The joke website “Cape Breton if Trump Wins” went viral after it was launched in February.
Destination Cape Breton later stepped in to help field inquiries the site generated and says it also created a threefold increase in traffic to its own website.
The trial of a Sydney man accused of trying to hire someone to kill his ex-wife is due to resume this morning after it was abruptly adjourned yesterday to allow the judge to rule on a matter raised by the Crown.
53 year-old Roderick Joseph Domoslai faces two counts of counsel to commit murder, one count of counsel to commit arson and one count each of obstruction and perjury.
Judge Gregory Warner said he could not make a decision on an undisclosed matter raised by the Crown until he looked at case law.
He then adjourned court for the day after saying he would meet with the Crown at this hour to deliver his decision.
Open court is then due to resume at 9:30.
Domoslai has denied hiring Crown witness Erin Maxwell to arrange for the killing of Dawn MacNeil.
He also testified he hates his ex-wife but would not have her killed.
