Nova Scotia Power warns of new phone scam
Nova Scotia Power is warning people about a new phone scam.
The utility says some customers have been getting calls from someone who says they work for the power company.
The caller demands the customer arrange for immediate payment, or they’ll send a Nova Scotia Power crew to the customer’s house to disconnect the power within the hour.
The scammer demands payment via pre-paid credit card, and occasionally via gift card.
Nova Scotia Power says it would not call customers unexpectedly and issue an ultimatum on first contact. They also don’t accept gift cards as payment.
Anyone who gets this call and is worried about the status of their electricity bill should call the company’s customer care centre at 1-800-428-6230.
Customers should also report any attempted fraud to local police.
