The province is now under a state of emergency to help contain the spread of COVID-19.
Police can issue fines of a thousand dollars a day to people who don’t follow orders to stay at home for 14 days if they’ve travelled outside Nova Scotia.
People not keeping the proper social distance of six feet or two metres can also be fined a thousand dollars.
Premier Stephen McNeil says the government was forced to take these steps after he heard reports of people ignoring COVID-19 precautions.
Businesses that violate the Health Protection Act can be fined 75-hundred dollars a day.
They can also be fined for charging higher than fair market prices for goods and services.
Social gatherings in the province are now limited to a maximum of five people.
All provincial parks, beaches and tourist attractions are closed.
However, provincial trails will stay open for exercise.
Businesses that are still open have to follow the six foot or two metre social distancing rule.
Dentists are no longer allowed to operate, except for emergency procedures.
Measures to tighten the province’s borders came into effect at 6:00 this morning.
All non-essential travel outside the province is now banned.
Exceptions are in place for services including trucking, health care and law enforcement.
Anyone who’s travelled outside the province will need to stay at home for 14 days.
Officials are in place to manage the new restrictions at the land border with New Brunswick, the North Sydney and Digby ferries and the Sydney and Halifax airports.
