As predicted, the price of gas went up, overnight. Gas rose by 2.3 cents a litre and now goes for a minimum of $1.04.1 in Cape Breton. Diesel went up by 3.9 cents a litre and now costs a minimum of $1.18.1.

There will be no classes at Sydney Academy today after a student there was struck and killed by a school bus, yesterday. However, the school will be open and grief councilors will be available. Regional Police say investigators are looking into the possibility that the student was pushed into the path of the bus while a group them was playing around. The student’s name has not been released but fellow students say he was Grade 12 student Chris Chafe. Police say the accident happened outside the school on Terrace Street at around 2:15 in the afternoon.
Harvest House in Glace Bay is looking for a new home. The facility on Main Street provides hot meals and counselling for those in need. Co-ordinator Melvin Sangster says a deal for them to take ownership of the building has fallen through. He adds they had plans to renovate and add a homeless shelter but he says they don’t want to raise money to fix up the building, it they don’t own it. Sangster says they’ve found a couple of possible new locations and are talking to the owners. He’s hoping to be out of their current building by the end of March.
Regional Police say alcohol may have been a factor in Monday night’s single motor-vehicle accident on Lingan Road. The crash that happened at around 11:30 left a 48-year old Sydney man with life-threatening injuries. Police say he’s since been transferred to hospital in Halifax and add their investigation is continuing. They say the injured man appears to have been the only one in the late-model Dodge Caravan that suffered heavy damage. The vehicle was heading westward into Sydney at the time of the crash.
Shareholders with Morien Resources have voted in favour of a plan to sell the company’s stake in the Donkin Mine. The Dartmouth-based firm says shareholders voted more than 99 per cent in favour of the deal during a special meeting, yesterday. Morien is selling its 25 per cent stake in Donkin to Kameron Collieries, an affiliate of The Cline Group. Kameron recently acquired a controlling interest in Donkin after it bought Glencore Xstrata’s 75 percent share. It will pay $5.5 million, including $2 million on closing, for Morien’s stake in the operation. The sale plan is expected to close before the end of the month.
