Cape Breton Child Poverty Rate Up To 34.9 Percent

A report released this morning finds Cape Breton continues to have the highest child poverty rates in the province at 34.9 percent.

That’s up from 31.9 percent in 2017.

The 2020 Report Card on Child and Family Poverty finds 24.6% of children in the province are living in poverty.

That’s an increase of 1.7 percent compared to 2017.

The federal riding of Sydney-Victoria has a child poverty rate of 36.5% while the rate in Cape Breton-Canso is 27.5 percent.

The authors say data in the report is for 2018 but they predict more families are worse off because of the pandemic, despite federal emergency income measures.

The report was commissioned by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.
