Burn Ban Fines Increased As Houston Seeks Federal Help To Fight Wildfires

The province is increasing the fine for breaking the ban on outdoor fires to 25,000 dollars as efforts continue to battle out-of-control wildfires.

Premier Tim Houston today called on the federal government to send any help it can to help fight the fires.

Houston says he’s asked for a number of things in his request to Ottawa, including helicopters, trucks, military firefighters and trades personnel from the military.

The province is also asking for a temporary leave benefit that would offer wage replacement for those unable to work because of the fires.

Meanwhile, the province says 20 Department of Natural Resources firefighters are coming back from the Northwest Territories and will join the firefighting effort tomorrow.

More firefighters are also coming in from New Hampshire and New York and will start work on Saturday.
