A number of sources have identified Thomas Ted Barrett as the inmate who was stabbed at the Burnside Jail in Dartmouth on the weekend.
The 39-year-old Glace Bay man is facing two counts of second degree murder in the deaths of Laura Jessome from Bras d’Or and Brett Elizabeth MacKinnon from Glace Bay.
Police are not confirming if Barrett is the victim.
However, Staff Sgt. Barb Saunders with the Halifax Regional Police says the victim entered a jail cell and was attacked by five inmates on Saturday evening.
There are reports that Barrett was stabbed in the chest area.
Investigators have not found the weapon.
The five suspects are facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
Police say the victim was sent to the QE II Hospital in Halifax with life-threatening injuries.
