Band Council Elections in Membertou

Band Council elections are taking place in Membertou, today.

Incumbent Terry Paul is looking for his 16th consecutive term as chief.

He’s being challenged by two opponents, Darrell Bernard and Kevin Christmas.

Paul was won 60 percent of the vote when he was challenged by Bernard, two years ago.

59 people are running for 12 council seats.

More than 800 people are eligible to vote in the elections.

The polls open at 9:00 this morning and will close at 8:00, tonight.

Election results are not expected to be revealed until tomorrow evening because of an anticipated high voter turnout and the effort that goes into counting the votes.
