Bail Denied In Hit & Run Case

Bail was denied today for a Sydney man charged in a deadly hit and run on the 125 Sydney Bypass in March.

26 year-old Thomas Smith faces counts of failure to stop at the scene of a fatal collision and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, as well as criminal negligence causing death, and operating a motor vehicle while disqualified.

54 year-old Jackie Desveaux, from Cheticamp, was killed when he was struck by a vehicle on the night of March 11th.

His family says he was a patient at the nearby Cape Breton Regional Hospital at the time of the incident.

They add Desveaux was a former member of the military and was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

RCMP say two people have been released on conditions on charges of accessory after the fact in the case.

Smith is due back in court for another bail hearing a week from today.

His foray into radio began with a research position at The Coast, which led to the production of a radio documentary on the music of the Mi’kmaq people. The program, entitled “First Nations, First Music” was co-produced with fellow Coast personality Ron Neville and released in early 2011. A graduate of Breton Education Centre, Dave went on to get a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Sociology from Cape Breton University, as well as a Master of Arts Degree in Sociology from Dalhousie University. He has worked as a teaching assistant at Dalhousie, and in various short-term customer service and research positions.
