Artist searches for photos of 12 men killed in No. 26 explosion

The artist who’ll create the monument to the explosion at Number 26 colliery is looking for photographs of the 12 men who died in the 1979 mine explosion.

Timothy P. Schmalz wants the photos so he can accurately depict the men’s faces.

Organizers behind the memorial park project said Schmalz is also looking for any articles of clothing these men might have worn and tools they used on the job.

While organizers behind the memorial park have contact information for some of the 12, there are some they say they can’t track down; so they’re asking for the public’s help.

Family members or people who know family members of the men are asked to contact either Joanne Shepard  or Mary Pat Mombourquette at the Cape Breton Miner’s Museum.
