A Month of “Extraordinary” Emergency Department Closures Starts Today

What’s been described as an extraordinary number of emergency department closures at the Glace Bay and Northside Hospitals is starting today.

Cape Breton Medical Staff Association president Dr. Margaret Fraser warned about the closures for the month of May, last month.

The provincial Health Authority says the Glace Bay Emergency Department will be shut down from 3:00 in the afternoon until 7:00 the next morning, starting today through Thursday.

The Emergency Department at the Northside General Hospital is shut down for the entire day today and tomorrow and won’t reopen until 8:00 on Thursday morning.

The Health Authority says the closures at both hospitals are necessary because there aren’t enough doctors to cover the shifts.
