Transit Service Seeing Effects of Lower Student Numbers: Public Works Director

CBRM Public Works director John Phalen says federal rules reducing international student enrollment at Cape Breton University have brought down the number of people using the transit service.

Phalen says the municipality has had meetings with CBU recently to discuss the issue.

Phalen also says lower ridership could translate into savings because of less bus use and less overtime for drivers.

He says a new provincial program providing free bus passes to low income residents could help increase ridership.
