Battiste, Kelloway Both Hoping To Represent New Federal Riding

It looks like Cape Breton’s two Liberal MP’s will be competing to represent the same riding in the next federal election.

Cape Breton-Canso MP Mike Kelloway is declaring his candidacy for the new federal riding of Sydney—Glace Bay, where Sydney-Victoria MP Jaime Battiste has said he also intends to run.

The ridings of Sydney-Glace Bay and Cape Breton–Canso—Antigonish are being created as part of the required redrawing of the electoral map and Kelloway notes Cape Breton—Canso—Antigonish doesn’t include his hometown of Glace Bay.

In a newly released Op-Ed that doesn’t mention Battiste by name, Kelloway says he’s the one who grew up and lived in the riding.

Battiste, who is from Eskasoni, launched an unsuccessful court challenge arguing it’s unconstitutional to take Eskasoni out of the riding.
