Churchill Resigns As Liberal Leader

Zach Churchill announced his resignation as provincial Liberal party leader this morning.

Churchill says he’ll be replaced on an interim basis by Sydney-Whitney Pier MLA Derek Mombourquette and Timberlea-Prospect MLA Iain Rankin who will split their time in the role evenly, starting with Mombourquette.

Mombourquette and Rankin are the only Liberal MLA’s in the Legislature after last month’s provincial election.

Today’s announcement comes after a judicial recount yesterday confirmed Churchill lost his Yarmouth seat.

The recount improved Progressive Conservative Nick Hilton’s lead over Churchill from 14 votes to 16.
