There’s going to be a special meeting of Regional Council this afternoon where councillors will hear from the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities or NSFM.
Today’s meeting comes after Council voted in January to invite the three associations the municipality belongs to, to appear before it to explain the benefits of being a member of their organization.
The move was prompted by councilors’ feelings of being abandoned by the NSFM when the province introduced a new Service Exchange Agreement with municipalities, last fall.
The new agreement will see the $15 million dollars a year the CBRM gets under the program be cut to $13.6 million after five years.
A municipal staff report says the CBRM pays an annual membership fee of $69,000 to be part of the NSFM with extra costs for travel and accommodations.
