A ceremony to mark the opening of the first long-term care home in a First Nation in the province was held this morning in Eskasoni.
The new 48-room home is called Kiknu that means “our home” in Mi’kmaw.
Mi’kmaw culture has been embedded into many aspects of the home.
That includes the building’s turtle shape that represents the Indigenous reference to Turtle Island, as North America is known.
The new home is owned by Eskasoni Mi’kmaw Nation and Eskasoni and Shannex will operate and manage the home in partnership.
