Councillors Support Taxi By-law Amendment

Cape Breton Regional Council voted unanimously this morning to pass first reading of an amendment to the municipality’s taxi by-law.

The amendment will allow a service fee for the use of debit or credit cards when paying taxi fares.

The change will see taxis charge a fee of $2.00 or $5.00 depending on the fare to customers who pay by debit or credit.

Staff is recommending the fee after the local taxi industry requested it to recover the merchant fees it pays when people use debit or credit cards.

A public hearing on the amendment will now be advertised before it goes to second reading.
