Mayor, Council & Staff Make Their Case On Bill 340 In Halifax

Mayor Amanda McDougall, Regional Councillors and municipal staff called for amendments to Bill 340 during an appearance before the Legislature’s Law Amendments Committee in Halifax this morning.

McDougall is calling on the provincial government to sit down with the Regional Municipality to negotiate a separate Memorandum of Understanding rather than be covered under the bill with 47 other municipalities.

She says she also wants the province to stop having the municipality collect taxes for provincial services.

Councillor Steve Gillespie and Chief Financial Officer Jennifer Campbell called for a permanent doubling of the municipal capacity grant, commonly known as equalization.

Campbell also called for the grant to be indexed to inflation.
