New Marine Atlantic Ferry Getting Mi’kmaq Name

Marine Atlantic says its newest ferry will have a Mi’kmaq name.

The new energy efficient vessel will be called Ala’suinu that name means “Traveller” in Mi’kmaq.

The Crown Corporation says it consulted with Indigenous groups on potential names that would recognize their culture and heritage.

The new ferry is expected to enter service next year.

It can carry up to 1000 passengers and has 146 passenger cabins, including pet friendly cabins.
