by Housing Minister John Lohr says the government is accepting all the recommendations in an Auditor General’s report released today that finds Nova Scotia doesn’t have an effective governance structure in place for public housing.
Kim Adair says the audit carried out by her office finds regional housing authorities are not effectively managing public housing application and tenant placement processes.
There are more than 11,000 public housing units in the province, with the majority in the Cape Breton and Halifax regional municipalities.
But Adair says there were close to 6,000 applicants on the waiting list for housing as of December 31st, with an average wait time of two years.
Lohr says the government has taken steps to reduce the wait-lists and decrease the turnaround time on vacant units.
