Province, Ottawa Announce Funding To Redevelop Local Oyster Industry

The province and the federal government are spending $2 million in a bid to redevelop the oyster industry in the Bras d’Or Lakes.

The parasite MSX sidelined the industry in the Bras d’Or for the past 15 years.

The Verschuren Centre at Cape Breton University will use the money to develop a land-based oyster hatchery to provide healthy larvae to Bras d’Or Lakes oyster growers.

The Centre’s lab will decontaminate equipment and water to prevent the spread of MSX.

The oyster industry in the Bras d’Or Lakes used to generate about 80 per cent of oyster landings in Nova Scotia.
