7 New COVID Cases In NS; First Vaccines Expected Next Week

The province is expecting to get 1,950 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine a week from today pending approval by Health Canada.

However, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Strang says doses from the first shipment will only be given out in the Central Zone.

Strang says the Pfizer vaccine has to be frozen and the manufacturer has told the province they need to immunize people as close as possible to the place where the product is stored.

Strang says vaccines will not be available to people at lower risk until the summer and vaccinating everyone in the province is expected to take until the fall.

News about the vaccine delivery comes as the province reports 7 new cases of COVID-19 today.

Two of the new cases reported today are in the Western Zone with one in the Northern Zone and four in the Central Zone.

There’s now a total of 78 confirmed active cases of the virus in Nova Scotia.

Meanwhile, today’s COVID-19 briefing was ended suddenly after only a few questions from reporters.

The Premier’s Office later confirmed the meeting ended early because Premier Stephen McNeil wasn’t feeling well.
