Membertou Chief Terry Paul says his community is planning a self-regulated lobster fishery similar to the one in the southwestern part of the province that’s generated opposition from non-Indigenous fishermen.
Paul made the announcement on social media today.
He says the plan for the fishery will include an opportunity for community members to give input.
Paul says people in Membertou will soon be fishing for their own livelihood on the community’s own terms.
However, he doesn’t give a specific date for when the fishery will be launched.
