The Cape Breton Regional Police says they requested an emergency alert as they searched for a man suspected of two separate shootings on the North side yesterday, but had him in custody before that alert could be issued.
Spokesperson Desiree Magnus says the force asked the Nova Scotia government to issue the emergency alert around 5:30 last night, the same time they issued news releases and tweets warning the public that Raymond Leroy was still at large.
Magnus says when Leroy was arrested in Membertou at 6:30, the alert request still hadn’t been processed.
She says regional police then cancelled the request.
Leroy is accused of shooting a man and a woman in two separate shootings ten minutes apart in Sydney Mines and Florence, beginning at 4:30 PM.
Police say both are still in hospital; the man is being treated for serious injuries while the woman is in stable condition.
Anyone with information about these shootings is asked to call Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.
