Neighbours of New Waterford convent concerned about fire risk

People who live near the former Saint Agnes convent in New Waterford say they’re worried their homes could be at risk if the abandoned building catches fire again.

The old convent went up in flames early yesterday morning; firefighters were called to the blaze around 1:30.

New Waterford Fire Chief Lenny Barrington says the building’s future is unclear, until the provincial fire marshal completes an investigation.

He says if the winds had been high, the fire could’ve spread to other homes.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation; investigators are treating the fire as suspicious.
