Emergency Test Signal On Portable Devices, This Afternoon

Most cellphones, tablets and other portable devices will be sounding an alarm, this afternoon.

The noise is a test of the public emergency alert system that’s now been extended to portable devices.

Test signals will go to every mobile device connected to an LTE network at 1:55.

The alert will also be aired on TV and radio stations, including the Coast.

In an emergency, the alerts will be used to warn people about tornadoes, floods, fires, water contamination Amber alerts and other dangers.

Some portable devices will make a distinctive noise during today’s test while other devices will simply buzz.
