Municipal Affairs Minister Derek Mombourquette has introduced amendments he says will help the Cape Breton Regional Municipality with port development.
The changes to the Municipal Government Act will allow the Regional Municipality to provide concessions to the private consultants marketing a shipping container terminal for Sydney.
In November Regional Council approved an agreement to lease or sell a parcel of land for a proposed container terminal to Sydney Harbour Investment Partners.
The amendments will allow the municipality to sell and lease property for less than market value as well as provide tax concessions to a commercial entity.
Mombourquette says today’s changes are not related to discussions on a Charter for the Regional Municipality that will take much longer to complete.
