Council Approves Rezoning For Big Pond Park

Regional Council has narrowly voted to approve a zoning amendment for a proposed recreational vehicle park in Big Pond.

Councillors voted 7-6 in favour of a staff recommendation to allow the rezoning.

The move comes after Council got advice from municipal solicitor Demetri Kachafanas this morning.

Council put the vote on hold after Councillor Blue Marshall put forward a motion asking for a full consultation with Cape Breton’s five Mi’kmaq communities.

Kachafanas told Council consultation with the Mi’kmaq is not within its mandate under the municipal planning strategy.

The project still needs approval from a number of provincial departments before it can go ahead.
