Preliminary Hearing Today in Sydney Bypass Hit and Run

A preliminary hearing is due to get underway today for a Sydney man charged in a fatal hit and run on the Sydney Bypass.

27 year-old Thomas Joseph Smith faces counts of failing to stop at the scene of an accident, dangerous driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death by texting while driving.

He’s also been charged with driving while disqualified and obstruction of justice by hiding, repairing, and burning his vehicle.

54-year-old Jackie Deveau from Cheticamp died in March after being hit while trying to flag down vehicles near the Mira Road exit.

At the time, Deveau was a patient at the nearby Regional Hospital and his family says the military veteran suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
