A jury has found Cape Breton native Christopher Garnier guilty of second degree murder in the September 2015 death of Catherine Campbell in Halifax.
The verdict came after only four and a half hours of deliberation.
The Crown says Garnier choked and hit Campbell on the night she died, while the defence argued at trial she died accidentally during rough sex.
Garnier has also been found guilty of indecently interfering with human remains in the case.
During the trial, the Crown told the jury Garnier used a compost bin to dispose of Campbell’s body.
The verdict on the murder charge carries an automatic life sentence, with no parole for at least 10 years.
Garnier is now due back in court for sentencing on the second count on May 7th.
