Drivers Passed Stopped School Buses 107 Times, Last Year

The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board is reminding drivers about school bus safety on this first day of classes for its students.

Drivers in both directions are required to stop when a school bus’ red lights are flashing.

However, the Board’s Manager of Transportation Tara Gaskell says they have reports of drivers passing stopped school buses on almost a daily basis.

She adds the problem is concentrated on Grand Lake Road where there were 107 cases of drivers going by stopped school buses,  last year.

Drivers who pass a stopped school bus face a fine of 410 dollars and four demerit points for a first offence.

Drivers are also being reminded to slow down in school zones where speed limits range from 30 to 50 kilometers an hour when children are present.
