The union for support staff at Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board says 28 of its members got layoff notices this week.
CUPE Local 5050 adds the workers include 23 teaching assistants, two secretaries, two supervisor cleaners and one cleaner.
The union also says a bus driver and an inventory clerk position have been lost through attrition.
CUPE local president Mary Jessome says the timing of the layoffs is poor considering elected board members recently voted to increase their own wages.
She adds the wage increases add up to about $40,000 and goes on to say that amount of money could have been used to keep a number of staff.
