Paul MacEwan’s Funeral, Today

The funeral for long time Cape Breton Nova MLA Paul MacEwan will take place later this morning.

 

MacEwan died last Tuesday at the age of 74 after being in palliative care in Sydney.

 

He was first elected as an NDP MLA in 1970 and served continuously for 33 years.

 

He was expelled from the NDP in 1980 for criticising a member of the party executive.

 

MacEwan then founded the Cape Breton Labour Party and later sat as an independent before joining the Liberal Party.

 

He also served as a speaker of the Legislature for a period of time.

 

His funeral will take place at 10:00 this morning at Holy Redeemer Church in Whitney Pier.
