by Glace Bay coach, umpire and referee Nick Bonnar will be presented with this year’s Carl Anthony “Campy” Crawford Award at a ceremony, later this morning.
The award was established by Cape Breton Regional Police in honour of Crawford, who became the first black municipal police officer in Nova Scotia in 1964.
Bonnar has coached young hockey and baseball players for a combined total of 48 years.
As an umpire, he earned international attention at the Little League World Series in Pennsylvania for his animated strike calls behind the plate.
His long list of other volunteer credits includes the school breakfast program at Glace Bay Elementary and a promoter of healthy living with his own “Walk with Nick” program.
Bonnar will be on hand to receive the award at 11:30 this morning during the 17th Annual Harmony Luncheon to celebrate the International Day for the elimination of Racial Discrimination.
The event takes place at Cape Breton University’s Verschuren Centre.
