by The faculty association at Cape Breton University has issued a strike notice in the wake of its meeting, yesterday afternoon.
The union says it will call for a strike to begin on January 23rd if a deal isn’t reached by January 21st.
The association has been in a legal strike position since December 26th and a strike or lockout can happen with 48 hours notice.
The main issue in the contract dispute is a so-called layoff clause.
Faculty Association spokesperson Andrew Reynolds says layoffs would be prompted if CBU faces a seven percent deficit.
He adds seven percent is too low a threshold and goes on to say that raises concerns layoffs will be a response of first resort rather than an extraordinary measure.
He also says seven percent is in line with the 3.5 million dollar shortfall CBU is forecasting in the next two and a half years.
